The paper presents the origin and late twentieth-century modernisation of one of the most avantgarde and characteristic public utility objects in Poznan from the interwar period. From the time of its completion the PKO building in Wolnosci Square met with the interest of the local residents, provoking both critical comments and enthusiastic admiration. From the viewpoint of Poznan conditions, the offices were granted luxurious outfitting – opulent material and avant-garde design were to emphasise the nature of the building. The object did not suffer wartime damage and its interwar décor was not disturbed by postwar exploitation.
