The periodical 'Nowiny' was launched in 1952 by the milieu of the Association of Polish Jews in Israel. Its members were for the most part former activists of the Association of Zionist Democrats 'Ichud' in Poland, who joined the Progress Party. 'Nowiny', similarly as many other foreign-language periodicals in Israel, were part of the system of Progress Party's partisan press. The launching of the publishing of foreign-language journals by political parties in Israel was for them an opportunity to win over voters, influence the opinions of the new olim, whom the Hebrew-language papers, often more critical of the parties, could not reach. The organizing of Jews arriving to Israel into unions and associations, followed by the publication of their papers, was an important element of the assimilation process.
