The article is devoted to basic first names and variant forms of first names of the population of Polish descent that live in the area of Balti and Stircea, located in northern Moldova. The collected anthroponymic material includes 178 basic first names (76 masculine and 102 feminine) as well as 562 derived forms. In the Polonian environment the masculine names of greatest frequency in Balti are: Aleksander (14), Stanislaw (11), Wiktor (11), Pawel (11); in Stircea: Antoni (7), Kazimierz (5), Mikolaj (5). Among feminine first names the most popular in Balti are: Ludmila (18), Tatiana (17), Walentyna (13), and Helena (12); in Stircea: Alla (5), Karolina (5), Paulina (5). The motives for choice of names are first names of Orthodox and Catholic saints, first names of ancestors, and first names of literary heroes. Derived names are mainly in the form of suffixal derivatives, in which Eastern Slavic linguistic elements definitely predominate.
