The well-known two settings of the polyphonic 'Benedicamus Domino', which have been critically discussed since 1961, were written in the margin of the antiphonal of the order of St Clare in Stary Sącz (ms PL-SS Muz 4), and were dated in their edition AMP (1973-77) to the year c. 1300. This dating was questioned in 1976 by Jaromir Cerny, who suggested the second half of the 14th century. The contradictory and uncertain dating of this antiphonal to between c. 1275 and 1350, the context of its polyphonic interpolation, including the papal bull of John XXII 'Docta sanctorum' (1324-25) and, above all, the recently established concordances (presented in the table) all confirm that Jaromir Cerny's dating is correct and it allows us to identify those two formulae of 'cantus planus' binatim, which had their models and counterparts in the repertoires cultivated on both sides of the Alps.
