The paper describes the development of policy of European integration institutions as concerns industry protection of the member countries. Coal and steel sectors were first to be protected in the Paris Treaty in 1951. As compared to measures applied by the European Economic Community, the EU has remarkably developed protection methods strengthening its international competitiveness.
