The paper deals with non-technological aspects of changes in the content of work in the conditions of growing automation. Basing on the empirical research and studies of literature on changes in the content of work of machine tool operators (conventional, Numerical Control - NC, and Computer Numerical - CNC) the author claims a growth of importance of non-technological factors of the situation of work in the formation of the structure of the content of work (the degree of complexity of action, the extent of autonomy, the level of required qualification etc.) Of special significance is the expansion of the range of organizational freedom brought about by the growing mechanization and automation. The research results are contrary to the theories of "technologistic" determinism of the content of work and refer to the modern theoretical and empirical orientation in the sociology of technology.
