Koncepcję zespołu osadniczego zaczęto rozwijać w polskiej geografii społeczno- -ekonomicznej w latach 60. XX w. w ramach zainteresowania teorią funkcjonalną. Funkcjonalizm podkreślał rolę relacji w podtrzymywaniu spójności systemu. W polskiej geografii społeczno-ekonomicznej myśl funkcjonalistyczna jest głęboko zakorzeniona, choć w większości prac podejmujących problem przemian funkcjonalnych nie ma większej refleksji nad tradycją, aspektem teoretyczno-metodologicznym, a tym bardziej filozoficznym takich ujęć. W badaniach geograficznych, zwłaszcza w geografii osadnictwa, funkcjonalizm odnosił się przede wszystkim do metod badań. Funkcjonalizm wywarł duży wpływ na rozwój teorii układów osadniczych, w tym koncepcje zespołu i lokalnego systemu osadniczego. Celem opracowania jest przedstawienie ewolucji myśli geograficznej w zakresie tych koncepcji oraz ich zastosowań, wraz ze wskazaniem nowych przemyśleń teoretycznych.

The concept of settlement system began to develop in the socio-economic geography in the 60s the twentieth century. Functionalism emphasized the role of relationships in maintaining a coherent system. In the Polish socio-economic geography functionalist thought is deeply rooted, even though most of the work taking up the problem of functional change has greater reflection on tradition, theoretical and methodological aspects, and the more philosophical of such approaches. The geographic research functionalism refers primarily to test methods. Functionalism had a major influence on the development of the theory of settlement, including the concepts of complex and the local settlement system. The aim of this paper is to present the evolution of thought in the field of geographic concepts and their applications, along with new thoughts theoretical conviction.
