W artykule omawiana jest kwestia wykorzystania metali ziem rzadkich w różnych nowatorskich zastosowaniach i związane z tym strategiczne znaczenie tych pierwiastków dla dalszego rozwoju gospodarki opartej na wiedzy (GOW). W rozważaniach uwzględniono problematykę zagrożeń ekologicznych, wynikających z eksploatacji metali ziem rzadkich oraz funkcjonowania światowego rynku. Wysoka zależność UE od importu metali ziem rzadkich stwarzać może w przyszłości pewne zagrożenia dotyczące ciągłości dostaw.

The article deals with the question of the use of rare earth metals in a variety of innovative applications and related strategic importance of these elements for further development of the knowledge‑based economy (KBE). The discussion included, issues of ecological risks associated with use of rare earth metals and the functioning of the global market. The high dependence of the EU on imports of rare earth metals may pose in the future certain risks associated with continuity of supply.
