Publishing Houses of Polish Books for Children and Young People under Prussian Rule in the 19th Century

The aim of this article is to present printing firms of Polish books published in the Prussian partitioning zone which have been addressed to young readers, and determinate what and how many of these books were made available to juvenile. The article is composed of three parts. The first part, that includes a presentation of the publishing milieu in Poznań and Wrocław, discusses the quantitative and qualitative structure of the relevant publishing production in these main printing centres. The second part concerns Polish books for children published in the provincial town-based firms in the other parts of Prussian occupying zone. The third part deals with describing the history of the publishing houses in emigration centres (Leipzig, Dresden) as well as children’s literature published there. Despite the restrictive censorship, bitter repression and enforced Germanization, the nineteenth century editors of Polish books and periodicals undertook the effort of raising the level of juvenile’s education and maintain the national consciousness among the young Poles living in the region under Prussian rule.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest prezentacja firm wydawniczych publikujących w zaborze pruskim polskie książki adresowane do młodych czytelników, jak również przedstawienie danych o liczbie wydrukowanych pozycji oraz przykładowych tytułów utworów, jakie wówczas były najczęściej dostępne dla młodocianych odbiorców. Artykuł składa się z trzech części. Pierwsza zawiera omówienie środowiska wydawniczego w Poznaniu i we Wrocławiu; przedstawia ilościowy i jakościowy wymiar istotnej dla poruszanego tematu produkcji edytorskiej w tych dwóch głównych ośrodkach. Część druga dotyczy polskich książek dla dzieci wydawanych przez oficyny z siedzibą w miastach prowincjonalnych, znajdujących się w innych regionach zaboru pruskiego. Natomiast część trzecia zajmuje się losem wydawców w ośrodkach emigracyjnych (Lipsk, Drezno) i publikowaną tam literaturą dziecięcą. Mimo restrykcyjnej cenzury, dotkliwych represji i wymuszanej germanizacji, dziewiętnastowieczni edytorzy polskich książek i czasopism podejmowali jednak trud podnoszenia poziomu wykształcenia i rozbudzania świadomości narodowej wśród młodych Polaków żyjących pod pruskim zaborem.
