The article discusses the situation in the labour market in Lodz administrative province over the years 1976-1980. The empirical foundation was provided by data contained in reports of the Employment and Welfare Department in Lodz. The situation was assessed by means of a measure characerizing the degree of confrontation of demand (number of vacant Jobs) and supply (number of job seekers) of labour. There was revealed a sortage of labour in the analyzed period and especially as regards skilled labour. The next Part of the article deals with actions undertaken by the local employment organ in order to ensure more effective use of labour resources in the situation of their declining increment.
