This article presents political activity of Kościuszko in the first period of his stay in France (during Legion times). Especially his connections with Polish people who emigrated after uprising (1794) are shown by the author. Because of political division of this group (emigrants) Kościuszko had to declare for one from the sides. The evolution of international situation formed his opinion and influenced on his decision. In the beginning Kościuszko supported the Agency of Franciszek Barss which was connected with France. Next-when the activity of Dyrektoriat disappointed him-he declared for the direct, persona] fight for Polish independence. The article also presents connection existing between the psyho-phisical state of Kościuszko and relations with Polish emigration. His outlook on life and attitude to activity clearly changed in this period. Experiences while he was in prison and also the process of growing old caused that he resigned form the post of main leader of nation and became the moral leader of Polish emigration.
