The article is а résumé of a much larger work {in preparation) which « aims at defining the situation in vocabulary teaching to students of English departments. Having studied the vocabulary load as used in teaching material and the vocabulary size in 10 students cf English Department, University of Łódź, following three years of studies (1977-1980), the author presents most common language difficulties and proposes several exercises such as: translation and retranslation exercises, descriptive and word-formation exercises. These might help students overcome some of their vocabulary problems.
