Some Problems of Bilingualism (on the Example of Włodavian Dialects)
Languages of publication
Abstracts
The paper discusses some problems of the linguistic interference formation in the bilingual, Polish-Ukrainian area of Włodavian dialects. As a result of the many hundred years old coexistence of the Ukrainian and Polish populations certain elements of the Ukrainian linguistic system were borrowed into the Polish linguistic system. A similar process took place in the opposite direction. The basic reasons for these transformations of both systems were of phonetic nature: the rules of choice and the minimization of effort. The Polonized Ukrainian population as well as the Russified Polish population started by moving some phonologically insignificant features from their primary to secondary systems. The acquisition of a secondary system depends considerably not only on the adoption of elements of the primary system but also on their proper distribution.
