Niniejszy tekst jest próbą weryfikacji tezy o zaniku form świadomości terytorialno- -społecznej w społeczeństwach industrialnych o przeszłości totalitarnej. Współcześni socjologowie twierdzą, że w takich społeczeństwach więzi emocjonalne i poczucie przynależności do terytorialnej zbiorowości społecznej nie występują w świadomości jednostki, poza poczuciem przynależności do rodziny oraz grupy narodowo-państwowej. Podstawą wniosków tu prezentowanych jest materiał badawczy uzyskany dzięki przeprowadzeniu 300 ankiet ze studentami geografii Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego w roku 1994. W związku ze specyfiką grupy respondentów i obszarem ich pochodzenia wnioski badawcze mają ograniczony charakter.

This paper is an attem pt to verify the hypothesis of the atrophy of territorial consciousness in industrial societies with a totalitarian past. M odem sociologist claim that, in this society, em otional bonds and a feeling of belonging to a territorial social comm unity do not occur in a consciousness of an individual, except for a feeling of attachm ent to a family (home) and to a national comm unity (nation, state). According to them, a modern civilization produces more and more unrooted nomads, who do not have their own ‘private’ fatherland, and to whom a creation of a feeling of attachm ent to a ‘private hom eland’ is proceeded by a form ation of a national consciousness, which is related to the ‘ideological hom eland’, which is olten very weak. The results obtained from 300 questionnaires filled in by students of the D epartm ent of Geography University of Łódź in 1994 are basis for the conclusions presented here. On account of the respondent groups specificity, nam ely the students and the area they come from, the conclusions are of a limited validity.
