The starting point of my article is the reflection upon the condition of the contemporary social-economic geography, the Polish counterpart of the human geography. This section of geography reminds of a class of specialities, separate subdisciplines, which underwent division in the 1950s, formed according to branch divisions of economy. Permanence of this division is rooted more in institutional rather than matter-of-fact fundamentals, particularly with respect to the transformations that the Polish geography has undergone since the beginning of the 1980s, and which are grounded on adoption by the geographers of the new theoretical-methodological approaches from the West by wich social geography, humanist geography, etc. Within the area of the discipline thus organised, various theoretical-methodological orientations co-exist simultaneously which are entirely different with regard to their ontological, epistemological and methodological assumptions. From the multitude of orientations a science emerges, internally rich in its variety or, according to someone else, divided and internally contradictory. It is the science of nature and the society at the same time, the science having holistic aspirations and, simultaneously, appreciating, recently in particular, the value of the individualistic perspective, the science in search of the universal laws and sometimes sensitive to the unique character of individual situations, the chorological (spatial) science and ecological ones, the science about things and the science about human being. One of the chances to overcome the above-mentioned dilemmas - ontological, epistemological and methodological - contained in the Polish human geography is the culturalistic conception.
