Human geography comprises two coexisting concepts of culture and man’s role in it - holism and individualism. Supporters of holism maintain that scientific explanations must refer to social integrity rather than individuals’, whereas individualistic approach assumes that more elementary explanations should be addressed to individuals. Holism prevailed in the former concept of human geography comprising both deterministic and possibilistic approaches. Superorganic concept of culture, as one of the forms of holism in geography of culture, exerted great influence on Carl Sauer’s American model of geography of culture. The article presents ontological and methodological implications of the use of this concept in geographical research on culture. In contrast to the presented reductionism and mechanicism of holistic approach there stands humanistic trend in geography which offers different theoretical and methodological approaches.

Artykuł poświęcony jest dyskusji toczącej się w obrębie geografii kultury i geografii człowieka w ogóle nad holistycznym i indywidualistycznym podejściem do rzeczywistości społeczno- -kulturowej. Egzemplifikacją podejścia holistycznego w tym wypadku jest superorganiczna koncepcja kultury, powstała w obrębie amerykańskiej antropologii kulturowej i przejęta przez amerykańską geografię kultury. Przeciwstawiony jej został nurt humanistyczny w obrębie geografii.
