The article discusses the issue of competencies in an organization. It provides an overview of various approaches to the nature of competencies that can be found in the literature of the subject today. The terminological context of competencies, qualifications and skills is outlined, because the terms are interdisciplinary and the literature of the subject defines them in many ways, which makes their interpretation confusing. In addition, the article gives an insight into the competencies-based management concept being part of HRM.
