,,University is a library surrounded by a complex of buildings’’. The role of the university library in a contemporary higher school has been concisely and unequivocally defined by Shelby Foot. Today the meaning of those libraries is bigger than whenever before. Fast evolution of science is the cause of information explosion. Simultaneously evolution in technology leading to world globalization makes communication easier. Speech, writing, electronic data carriers – it’s still open catalogue of forms of communication available in library offer. The directions of changes in modern scientific library are being determined by a common need of fast access not only to information, but also to sources. In the organization of higher school, library has extremely important, crucial function being connection between modern, quickly evaluating world. The quality of rendering services determines the real position of university library in academic life. The element of improving forms of activity and organization of working in new BGPŁ building is opening its magazines for users. The aim of this text is to present our experiences gained while planning and introducing the conception of free access to the shelves.
