The aim of the paper is to identify main factors influencing the quality of education, from labour market perspective, and suggest changes necessary to create a qualified work force, which would be competitive in the common european market. The paper reviews the current situation of polish higher education institutions as well as the developments of the past decade, focusing on the qualities of graduates - knowledge, skills, values and mobility. In the second part, means of improving the competitiveness of graduates are discussed: an elastic system of studies, a coherent two-degree system, creating academic bodies responsible for identification of labour market trends and needs, implementation of proper quality control procedures, improving teaching skills of academic staff, and creating incentives for selfdevelopment.
