Rural social capital in contemporary Poland. Research review and methodological comments

The article presents a critical review of research approaches, study results and views on social capital, as well as the related social and civic activity in Poland’s rural areas. The results of studies carried out applying diverse methods by representatives of various scientific disciplines, including the results of nationwide surveys have been compiled and commented. The article contains a critical analysis of selected measures of social capital and social activity used in the studies basing on statistical data, especially in the context of urban-rural comparison. The need for a greater number of qualitative research on social capital of Poland’s rural areas, in particular communities has been emphasized. Such studies will allow for identification of mechanisms of capitalizing social resources, the actual (rather than statistical) relationship between the functioning of interpersonal bonds and various aspects of local development.

W artykule dokonano krytycznego przeglądu podejść badawczych, wyników badań i poglądów na temat kapitału społecznego, a także związanej z nim aktywności społecznej i obywatelskiej na polskiej wsi. Zestawiono wyniki badań realizowanych różnymi metodami przez przedstawicieli różnych dyscyplin naukowych, w tym wyniki ogólnopolskich sondaży. Dokonano krytycznej analizy wybranych mierników kapitału społecznego i aktywności społecznej stosowanych w badaniach bazujących na danych statystycznych.
