The article describes the special character of the work-life programmes functioning in German companies. Presentation of the instruments adopted by the German firms is preceded by an analysis of key factors determining work-life balance in Germany, mainly demographic changes and some elements of social policy. Most of the article’s space is devoted to discussing how German firms apply the work-life balance programmes to help their employees reconcile their work and family responsibilities. The article also highlights German achievements in assessing the costs and benefits involved in implementing the work-life balance instruments.
