In its introductory part the article presents an outline of evolution of state interventionism in the capitalist economy, and of formation process of the state’s internal and external functions. A great deal of attention has been devoted to the principle of unrestrained freedom of contracts in the manpower market and its consequences. This paves the way for a conclusion that it was in this market that the capitalist state was compelled relatively early to employ intervention restricting the principle of complete economic freedom. The further part of the article is devoted to genesis of the contemporary state interventionism in the capitalist economy and barriers to its development.
