The author discusses results of researches conducted among pupils in two vocational trade schools in Łódź in 1979. There are presented motives of selecting a given vocational school, attractiveness of the shop assistant's profession, professional plans of young people concerning their future work. The author formulates a conclusion that it becomes necessary to develop interests of young people in the shop assistant’s profession in the course of their learning in a vocational school so that after completing it a bigger share of young people take up work in the acquired profession than it is the case today.
