The German espionage-sabotage activity between March 1933 and September 1939, carried out by the structures and organisations of special services of the Third Reich, significantly facilitated the Wehrmacht’s fight against the Eastern Operational Group (GO “Wschód”) in the Kulmerland. The German special services, intensively developing their massive espionage activity in the Kulmerland in the 1930s, did good reconnaissance of fortifications over the Osa as well as forces and resources of the EOG. German saboteurs operating in the Kulmerland strongly influenced the actions of troops subordinate to Brigade general M. Bołtuć. The members of the German Fifth Column effectively disrupted communication between subunits, directed the fire of German artillery, caused confusion at the rear, thus discouraging the EOG soldiers. The saboteurs carried out the reconnaissance of the frontier for the benefit of the advancing German subunits in order to help them bypass the Polish positions, thus contributing to the success of the Wehrmacht. Taking into account the above-mentioned facts, we can state that the German minority in the Kulmerland in the period under study conducted an intensive intelligence activities for the benefit of the Third Reich. The groups of German saboteurs supported the Wehrmacht during the warfare against the EOG, carrying out large-scale subversive and sabotage operations.
