Choć mogłoby się wydawać, że analizowany leksem – szyja – nie ma fundamentalnego znaczenia w językowej interpretacji świata i człowieka, to – jak wynika z niniejszych badań – nawet ten drobny element „mapy somatycznej” ma w polszczyźnie stosunkowo duży ładunek konceptualny. Punkt wyjścia analizy stanowią podstawowe, najprostsze treści pojęciowe, wpisane w definicje leksykalne i w najsilniej utrwalone znaczenia. Stopniowo opis jest rozszerzany o bardziej szczegółowe konceptualizacje, w tym treści rozwijane w wybranych tekstach współczesnych. Poczynając od cech fizycznych i funkcji anatomicznych, poprzez odniesienia do zdrowia i choroby, opis sięga językowej konceptualizacji złożonych relacji międzyludzkich i gestów, także tych, które przywołują pojęcia życia i śmierci. Artykuł nawiązuje do badań nad językowym obrazem świata oraz do założeń semantyki ramowej. Co istotne, zakładam, że w analizach nie można pominąć zmian, jakie zachodzą we współczesnym sposobie rozumienia organizacji świata oraz miejsca, jakie w nim zajmuje człowiek. Zmiany te przekładają się bowiem na obraz wyrażany w języku.

It would seem that the Polish lexeme szyja ‘neck’ occupies an inconspicuous position in the linguistic interpretation of the world and of humans. However, as this study shows, even this small element of the “body map” in Polish has a relatively large conceptual load. The starting point for the analysis is the basic conceptual content inherent in lexical definitions and in the most entrenched conventional meanings. The description is then gradually extended onto more detailed conceptualizations, including meanings activated in contemporary written texts. Beginning with physical characteristics and anatomical functions, through references to health and illness , the description reaches the linguistic conceptualization of complex human relationships and gestures , including those that invoke the concepts of life and death. This study is couched within research on linguistic worldview and the principles of frame semantics. It is assumed that analysis cannot disregard the changes that take place in contemporary understanding of the world and the place of humans within it, as these changes have a bearing on the linguistic worldview.
