After the First World War, the structures of the Prussian state broke down. One of the people who opposed the capitulation tendencies of the Prussian Army, was Gerhard Rossbach. In Grupa near Grudziądz, he called into existence a new military formation, referred to as Grenzschutz. Oficially, the unit’s task was to protect the borders of the Prussian state. In fact, his actions, carried out under the guise of protection against alleged Polish uprising, resembled a private war against everything that was associated with Polishness. The actions of the Grenzschutz soldiers commanded by Rossbach, pacified the patriotic moods of Polish society in 1918–1919. The activities of the formation against Polish patriots in Brodnica, Wąbrzeźno or Chełmża, uncovered the ruthless character of this unit. Moreover, later actions of Rossbach’s soldiers in Courland, German territories, or the suppression of the Silesian uprising, only emphasized this character. It is also symptomatic that many of Rossbach’s veterans later became the organizers of Nazi paramilitary organizations such as the S.A. or the SS.
