In the existing subject literature, the issues connected with functioning of kitchens within Teutonic castles have been approached more broadly only on the basis of medieval written sources. Meanwhile, the knowledge on this subject is also provided by archeological research. During research works on several castle sites from the area of the former state of the Teutonic Order in Prussia, some kitchen interiors, and/or relics of appliances used to drain waste, were revealed. Even though they were identified to a varying degree, the discoveries made by archeologists are both interesting and important for the research on functioning of such types of rooms. The traces of constructions connected with kitchen fire appliances in some Teutonic castles are also significant. The article presents mainly the current findings of researchers, which were made on the basis of the results of archeological and architectural studies of several castle sites. They were supplemented with the author’s thoughts on the likely functions and types of the discovered appliances or objects which served for storing and preparing food in kitchens.
