The aim of the article is to show the development of research on the history of Grudziądz during the Second Polish Republic, with particular emphasis on the first decade of the state’s independent existence. The review includes primarily important books and articles in scientific or popular journals, and, in the absence of these, also magazines. Individual issues of the problem were considered chronologically in three different stages, covering the period of the Second Polish Republic (1918/20–1939), the period of People’s Republic of Poland (1945–1989) and the co-called Third Polish Republic. Grudziądz of the interwar period played an important role in the history of Pomerania, affecting it strongly especially in terms of economy, military and education and culture. Therefore, extensive mentions of these topics were included in all major publications concerning the history of the entire region and significant areas of life of its inhabitants. However, it was only in recent years, after the publication of the fifth volume of „Historia Pomorza” (Toruń 2015 and 2018), that the history of Grudziądz and the surrounding area was well-entered in the latest history of the region. Somewhat earlier, in 2012, there was published the monograph „Historia Grudziądza w latach 1920–1945” (vol. 1–2). The knowledge about the city and its inhabitants is significantly supplemented by biographies of well-known figures published in journals and specialist dictionaries. Apart from general and dictionary studies, the bibliographic section included in this paper covers the following: the circumstances and conditions of Grudziądz’s return to Poland, including documents illustrating the city’s recovery; location of Grudziądz on the administrative map of Poland and Pomerania; the research on the city’s political system; the functioning of self-government and administration of the city. The relatively slow progress in research on the society of Grudziądz, especially demographic changes caused by migration movements and integration processes, is pointed at. The significant progress in the research related to national and religious issues was noted only in the last quarter of a century. Also works on political life, especially after the abolition of censorship, covered a wide range of political groups and organizations related to them. However, while political life and national and religious problems have already been comprehensively discussed, the economic life of the interwar Grudziądz still has not been fully presented. Against the background of social, political and economic problems, the development of research on the social infrastructure of Grudziądz in the Second Polish Republic, particularly on various forms of education, is quite advanced. Among other areas of life, it was the military garrison in Grudziądz that was being debated on. Especially after 1989 the garrison hosted numerous units and various forms of military education for the personnel of the Polish Army. Thus, despite some imperfections, the research and publications on the history of Grudziądz in the Second Polish Republic is significant, particularly after 1989. This applies, although to varying degrees, to almost all areas of Grudziądz’s life and the life of its residents.
