The article, presenting the history of Grudziadz during World War II, is based on the memoirs of Maria Daniel, an authoress and the main heroine of the events during the occupation of Grudziądz illustrated in the source of our selection. When the war broke out, Maria was only 11 years old. The authoress, as one of the few people at an older age, undertook to write down memories for the sake of future generations. The presented problem is important because the experiences connected with the war influenced the further post-war fate of the population that had been living in Grudziadz under the occupation; the more so because the history of the Nazi occupation among the local community of Grudziądz is little known. The authoress of the memoirs described everyday life in occupied Grudziadz, focusing primarily on education during the war, work and food. The article particularly describes the period of Maria’s growing up during the war. At the time of the outbreak of the war, Maria and her mother Zofia Kocińska stayed in Horodło on the Bug. Under these circumstances, there was nothing else to do but escape to Grudziądz, where Maria Daniel’s grandparents lived. Arrival in the hometown involved submission to the occupier’s power. In the current state of research, less and less memories of the war are published by survivors. Therefore, it is extremely important to document memories, which particularly relate to World War II, so that the young generation of Poles know what everyday life looked like during the occupation.
