The subject of the study is the population of Grudziądz and its changes between 1946 and 2020. The aim of this article is to present the importance of birth rate and migration balance in the city’s actual population growth up to 1994 and, from 1995 onwards in actual attrition. The starting material for the research was the data contained in the relevant Polish Central Statistical Office publications. Research findings: Between 1946 and 1994, Grudziadz’s population increased by 69,500, from 37,000 to 106,000. The birth rate amounted to 29,816, the domestic balance to 38,919, net migration to -1,660. The incorporation of new lands into the city brought about the increase of 2,400. Conversely, between 1995 and 2020, there was a decrease of 8,784 inhabitants, a result of negative birth rate (-3,273), domestic balance (-3,131) and, net migration (-2,380). Conclusions: The outlined course of demographic processes causing changes in the population status of Grudziądz is not isolated. These processes are similar in other medium-sized and large cities in Poland. The process of population decline in Grudziądz began early (1995) as major industrial plants were closed down during the political and economic transition, resulting in massive unemployment lasting several years. However, the depopulation process is more than twice as slow as the population process. There has been a characteristic transformation in the age structure of the town’s population, with a dramatic reduction in children and young people aged 0–14 and an increase in those aged 45 and over.
