Z. Zakrzewski was a conservator of prehistoric monuments for the Poznań Voivodeship (from 1919) and Pomeranian Voivodeship (from 1922) until 1939. After regaining independence in 1918, the administrative structures of Poland showed interest in the care of monuments: very early, on 31 October 1917, the Regency Council in Warsaw prepared the decree regarding the protection of monuments of art and culture. The care of the monuments was the responsibility of the Minister, on behalf of whom the conservators of cultural and artistic monuments were appointed regionally. Under the decree, conservation offices were incorporated into provincial offices, specifying that the activities shall be performed by the voivode with the help of conservation offices. The conservator Z. Zakrzewski was very active in the several counties: Grudziądz, Wąbrzeźno, Brodnica, Chełmno and Świecie. He conducted independent research, made notes and inventories of the fortified settlements. It was his great merit that already in 1929 some fortified settlements in Grudziadz county, among others in Słupsk Młyn, Szynwałd, Gruta, were under conservation protection. His handwritten sketches and notes in the Research Diaries, as well as reports, stored in the Scientific Archives of the Archaeological Museum in Poznań, are a unique source of many archaeological sites and monuments from the Chełmno, Świecie and Michałów lands.
