Political science has been involved in studying the political role of elites in modern democracy for a long time. It is surprising that political involvement of Polish social elites in the years 2000–2010 seems to be relatively high. Such a level of involvement was caused by medialisation of politics, great scandals of the years 2002–2002 as well as by the highly emotional dispute between two large right-wing political parties: PO and PiS. Furthermore, it seems that in the years 2000–2010 the artists, journalists and scholars were comparatively more engaged in the direct political struggle than sportspeople, trade union members and clergymen. It seems that Polish elites can be divided into the five following types, regarding their relation to the direct political struggle: (1) “impartial professional”, (2) “political educator”, (3) ”representative of society”, (4) “viewer reformer”, (5) “party mentor”. Evaluation of the elites political involvement leads to an indelible dilemma of democracy. On the one hand, democracy requires politically objective universities, media, theaters and temples. On the other hand scholars, journalists, artists and clergymen have not only full civil and political rights, but are also obliged to serve the public with their advice, experience and expertise.
