The main research problem was to establish whether the widely accepted political system principles typical of contemporary democratic states are present in the constitution of the Republic of Serbia, passed on 10 November 2006. My research allows me to express an unequivocal conclusion that almost all principles taken into account (the nation wields sovereign power, political representation, law-governed state, the republican form of government, the status of an individual within the state, the system of checks and balances, the separation of authorities, the separation of Church and other religious associations and State, the decentralization of state and local authorities, market economy) can be found in the constitution in question. In view of the above, the constitution of the Republic of Serbia correctly and in accordance with the widely accepted standards legalizes the “new” democratic system, which is currently undergoing a difficult process of political transformation. It is to be hoped that the political principles enshrined in the constitution and typical of democratic states will not be empty declarations but that they will be followed in the Serbian parliamentary cabinet system.
