Human capital plays a significant role in stimulating growth of the innovativeness and competitiveness in the contemporary economy. Uneven spatial distribution of human capital strengthens thedivergence process among national and regional economies. The paper portrays the role of human capital in the contemporary economy and presents the analysis of the distribution of human capital in Polish regions. The results of the analysis, based onthe constructed synthetic regional human capital index indicate significant disparities in the examined field. Moreover, the high correlation between human and economic development on the regional level confirms feedbacks occurring between them.
