The emigration of the Kashubians of Bytów to Germany in 1945–1979

In 1950, ca. 12,000 Kashubians lived in the Bytów county, including ca. 4,000 verified native Kashubians and ca. 8,000 extraneous Kashubians who used to live in Pomeranian voivodeship during the days of the Second Republic. The Kashubians constituted for 60% of the county’s population. The emigration of part of the Kashubians to Germany began with the action of family joining in 1956–1959. Approximately 210–220 persons left at that time. In the following years, the departures have been put to a halt and until 1963 only few were allowed to leave Poland. By the end of the 1960s, approximately 600 Kashubians have left the county. The normalisation of the relationship between Poland and the German Federal Republic after 1970 caused an increase in the number of emigrating Kashubians, who would leave mostly for economic reasons. In 1971–1979, 2,685 Kashubians left the Bytów county for Germany, and in general, in the years 1956–1979 – approximately 3,100.

W 1950 roku w powiecie bytowskim mieszkało około 12 tys. Kaszubów, w tym około 4 tys. z weryfikowanych Kaszubów autochtonicznych i około 8 tys. Kaszubów napływowych, którzy w Drugiej Rzeczypospolitej mieszkali w województwie pomorskim. Kaszubi stanowili 60% mieszkańców powiatu. Emigracja części Kaszubów do Niemiec rozpoczęła się wraz z akcją łączenia rodzin w latach 1956–1959. Wyjechało wówczas około 210–220 osób. W następnych latach wyjazdy zostały zahamowane i dopiero po 1963 roku zezwalano nielicznym osobom na opuszczenie Polski. Do końca lat sześćdziesiątych XX wieku wyjechało z powiatu około 200 Kaszubów. Normalizacja stosunków Polski z RFN po 1970 roku doprowadziła do zwiększenia liczby emigrujących Kaszubów, głównie z powodów ekonomicznych. W latach 1971–1979 wyjechało do Niemiec z powiatu bytowskiego 2685 Kaszubów, a ogółem w latach 1956–1979 około 3100.
