The article concerns the involvement of the Association for the Development of the Western Territories in solving the problems of the native population in the western and northern territories of Poland after 1956. The activists of the association attempted to use the political thaw felt after Władysław Gomułka’s return to power in 1956 in order to reactivate the state’s active policy regarding the territories acquired after 1945. They dedicated much of their attention to improving the situation of the native populace and stopping its exodus to Germany. The association contributed to improving the material situation of this group, organising its financial position, restoring the memory of pro-Polish activities of its representatives before the Second World War. The effects of the association’s actions were apparent during the short period directly after its founding. By the end of 1950s, the political authorities have gradually stopped tolerating the existence of individual social activity, turning almost all organisations – including the Association for the Development of the Western Territories – into executors of their own plans.

Artykuł poświęcono zaangażowaniu Towarzystwa Rozwoju Ziem Zachodnich w rozwiązanie problemów ludności rodzimej na ziemiach zachodnich i północnych Polski po 1956 roku. Działacze TRZZ usiłowali skorzystać z odwilży odczuwanej po powrocie do władzy Władysława Gomułki w 1956 roku w celu reaktywowania aktywnej polityki państwa w stosunku do obszarów włączonych po 1945 roku. Dużą uwagę poświęcali poprawie sytuacji ludności rodzimej oraz powstrzymaniu jej exodusu do Niemiec. Towarzystwo przyczyniło się do poprawy sytuacji materialnej tej grupy ludności, uporządkowania jej stanu majątkowego, przywrócenia pamięci o propolskiej działalności jej przedstawicieli przed drugą wojną światową. Efekty działalności TRZZ widoczne były w krótkim okresie bezpośrednio po powstaniu towarzystwa. Już w końcu lat pięćdziesiątych XX wieku władze polityczne stopniowo przestawały akceptować istnienie niezależnej aktywności społecznej, sprowadzając niemal wszystkie organizacje – w tym TRZZ – do roli wykonawców własnych zamierzeń.
