En la orilla (2013), by Valencian writer and journalist Rafael Chirbes, has been unanimously acclaimed by critics as the novel of the Spanish economic crisis (2008-2014) and the testament of an entire generation. In the fictional town of Olba, on the Levantine coast, systemic corruption is at once economic, moral and material. This article sets out to analyze the microcosm of Olba through the metaphor of waste. First, a loop of causes and effects leads the male characters to accept their defeat, embodied both by the cyclical structure of the story, the bankruptcy of the carpentry shop and the incineration of part of Esteban's legacy in the landfill. Superimposed on the annihilation of Esteban's material and moral heritage is the destruction of the natural territories of the Marina Alta, which deprives the people of their landscapes, their memories and, by extension, part of their identity. Finally, the bodies of the protagonists, turned into waste because of their uselessness, are the mirror of society's secular fear of disorder and the symbol of a form of biopower that would exercise rational control over bodies.

En la orilla (2013), del escritor y periodista valenciano Rafael Chirbes, ha sido unánimemente aclamada por la crítica como la novela de la crisis económica española (2008-2014) y el testamento de toda una generación. En el pueblo ficticio de Olba, en la costa Levantina, la corrupción sistémica es a la vez económica, moral y material. Este artículo se propone analizar el microcosmos de Olba a través de la metáfora del despilfarro. En primer lugar, un bucle de causas y efectos lleva los personajes masculinos a aceptar su derrota, plasmada tanto por la estructura cíclica del relato, como la quiebra de la carpintería y la incineración de parte del legado de Esteban en el vertedero. A la aniquilación del patrimonio material y moral de Esteban se superpone la destrucción de los territorios naturales de la Marina Alta, que priva a los pueblos de sus paisajes, de sus recuerdos y, por extensión, de parte de su identidad. Por último, los cuerpos de los protagonistas, convertidos en desechos por su inutilidad, son el espejo del miedo secular de la sociedad al desorden y el símbolo de una forma de biopoder que ejercería un control racional sobre los cuerpos.
