L’article analyse deux formes que prend le motif de l’arbre dans Les Rougon-Macquart, série de romanesque d’Émile Zola. La première, celle que l’on peut appeler « sociale » correspond à l’arbre généalogique des personnages formant la famille romanesque ; la création de cet arbre et la préparation d’informations détaillées sur chaque héros et ses destinées ont précédé le début des travaux sur la série, ce qui en fait de lui une sorte de sa pré-structure. La deuxième forme sous laquelle l’arbre apparaît dans les textes analysés est la forme « naturelle », associée à la nature (l’arbre comme plante) et saturée de symboles liés à l’amour et à la fertilité. Les deux formes partagent une référence à la vie comme valeur suprême et thème de base de la littérature naturaliste.

The paper analyses two images of a tree which occur in Émile Zola’s novel series The Rougon-Macquart. The first, which might be called a “social” one, is the genealogical tree of all thecharacters belonging to the fictive family. The preparation of the tree and of numerous details concerning each of the protagonists anticipated the writing of the novels; this is why the tree may be considered as a “pre-structure” of the entire series. The second image of a tree in Zola’s works is a “natural” one, connected to the universe (tree as a plant) and impregnated with many symbols referring to love and fertility. Both images converge in their relation to life as a crucial value and the main theme of the Naturalist writings.

Artykuł analizuje dwie formy, jakie przybiera motyw drzewa w cyklu powieściowym Émile’a Zoli Rougon-Macquartowie. Pierwszą z nich, którą można nazwać „społeczną”, jest drzewo genealogiczne postaci tworzących powieściową rodzinę; sporządzenie tego drzewa i przygotowanie szczegółowych informacji na temat każdego bohatera i jego losów poprzedziło rozpoczęcie pracy nad cyklem, co czyni z niego rodzaj pra-struktury całej serii. Drugą formą, w jakiej drzewo pojawia się w analizowanych tekstach, jest forma „naturalna”, związana z przyrodą (drzewo jako roślina) i nasycona symboliką dotykającą miłości i płodności. Obie formy łączy odniesienie do życia jako nadrzędnej wartości i podstawowego tematu literatury naturalistycznej.
