Rewitalizacja, rozumiana jako sekwencja planowanych działań, jest procesem naprawczym zdegradowanych terenów miejskich, który odbywa się w wymiarach: przestrzennym, gospodarczym, społecznym i kulturowym. Celem procesu jest przywrócenie zdegradowanym obszarom ich wartości społecznej, tj. podniesienie jakości organizacji przestrzeni, zapewnienie właściwej struktury funkcji, poprawa warunków życia oraz stabilizowanie pozytywnych relacji pomiędzy różnymi grupami użytkowników. Obecnie w Europie planowane demolowanie polega na usunięciu zdegradowanej substancji materialnej i istniejących dysfunkcyjnych struktur społecznych. Na podstawie studium przypadku Lyon La Duchère (Francja) przeanalizowano kwestię, czy demolowanie może być traktowane jako uzasadnione narzędzie rewitalizacji miast, zwłaszcza w odniesieniu do społecznego wymiaru tego procesu.

Revitalization, as a sequence of planned actions, is a recovery process of degraded urban areas, which takes place simultaneously in spatial, economic, social and cultural dimensions. The aim of the process is to restore degraded areas to their social value, i.e., to improve the quality of spatial organization, to ensure a proper structure of functions, to improve living conditions, and to stabilize positive relationships among different user groups. At present, in Europe, planned demolition means removal of degraded material substance and existing dysfunctional social structures. Based on the case study of Lyon La Duchère, (France), the paper analyses whether demolition can be treated as a legitimate tool for urban regeneration, especially with regard to the social dimension of the process.
