Przedmiotem analizy w artykule są 43 nazwy (w większości nazwy własne) pochodzące z utworów literackich, pism filozoficznych i korespondencji Juliusza Słowackiego. Poeta czyni je przedmiotem rozważań etymologicznych: objaśnia i komentuje, a także wyzyskuje ich wartość treściową. Objaśnienia etymologiczne Słowackiego (tylko nieliczne z nich są trafne) mają bardzo różny charakter i pełnią różne funkcje w utworach, z których pochodzą. Wszystkie te quasi-etymologie były związane z koncepcją ideowo-artystyczną, która znalazła swój wyraz przede wszystkim w Królu-Duchu, dlatego też stąd pochodzi najwięcej przykładów (22). Oddają one także ówczesną wiedzę i poglądy na temat pochodzenia np. imion legendarnych i historycznych postaci, upowszechnioną w XIX-wiecznej historiografii polskiej. Niezależnie od tego, w jakim stopniu trafne są próby objaśniania nazw, dowodzą one zainteresowania poety językiem i wagi, jaką przywiązywał on do słowa i jego znaczenia.

The subject for analysis in the paper are the 43 names (usually proper names) originating from Juliusz Słowacki’s literary works, philosophical writings and letters. The poet makes them the subject of etymological deliberations: he explains, comments, and exploits their material value. The Słowacki’s etymological explanations (only few are accurate) are very different in terms of their character and they perform different functions in works which they come from. All those quasi-etymologies were related to idealistic and artistic concept which was mainly expressed in The Spirit King, that’s why majority of examples are from that work. They also render the knowledge and opinions of that time on the origin of e.g. legendary and historical figures disseminated in the 19th century Polish historiography. Regardless of the level of accuracy, those attempts to explain names prove that the poet was interested in language and that he paid great attention to word and its meaning.
