The Kingdom of Emmanuel Carrère is a fi ctional story of a writer touched by the grace of faith, told by a writer touched by the grace of unbelief, feeling the inner imperative of making a public confession. The issues of the anthropology of the Kingdom of Carrère can be read in the context of Leonardo da Vinci’s Allegory of Pleasure and Suff ering, but the French celebrity proposes his own kind of allegory, let’s call it “Vinci à rebours”, in which holiness becomes suffering and return to sin is a pleasantly regained freedom. Describing the mystery of man, the author of the Kingdom builds his own anti-kingdom, because hedonism and nihilism are stronger in him than the longing for a deep spiritual life.

Królestwo Emmanuela Carrère’a to powieściowa historia pisarza dotkniętego łaską wiary, opowiedziana przez pisarza dotkniętego łaską niewiary, odczuwającego wewnętrzny imperatyw odbycia publicznej spowiedzi. Problematykę antropologii Królestwa Carrère’a można odczytać w kontekście Alegorii przyjemności i cierpienia Leonarda da Vinci, jednak francuski celebryta proponuje własny rodzaj alegorii – nazwijmy ją Vinci à rebours – w której świętość staje się cierpieniem, a powrót do grzechu to przyjemnie odzyskana wolność. Opisując tajemnicę człowieka, autor Królestwa buduje własne antykrólestwo; hedonizm i nihilizm są w nim bowiem silniejsze od tęsknoty za głębokim życiem duchowym.
