The spectators of Leszek Mądzik’s theater are used to silence in his wordless spectacles. Still, in his 2013 performance Mirror (Lustro), after forty years he returned to words. This time it is not just one sentence but a text read out loud offstage: a fragment of Bruno Schulz’s short story “Loneliness,” read by Jerzy Radziwiłowicz. Yet Mirror is not an adaptation of the story. Mądzik created his own, personal vision inspired by the motif of the mirror, which, as the title suggests, is a crucial component of the show.
