What actually happens in the Elective Affinities? What happens if individuals are overwhelmed by unconscious processes such as those that are hidden in the metaphor of the chemical affinities? This article addresses these questions from the psychological perspective and shows that Goethe positioned himself in his novel very close to the concepts of the unconscious and the psyche, as Carl Gustav Jung conceived about a hundred years later. The individuals who choose unconsciously (blindly) are unable to make actual decisions because they are prisoners of a rigid attitude of life, and in the end, life remains a mystery to them.

Was passiert eigentlich in Goethes Roman Die Wahlverwandtschaften? Was passiert, wenn die Individuen von unbewussten Prozessen wie denjenigen, die sich in der Metapher der chemischen Affinitäten verstecken, überwältigt werden? Der vorliegende Beitrag möchte sich mit diesen Fragen aus tiefenpsychologischer Perspektive befassen und aufzeigen, dass Goethe in seinem Roman sich sehr nah an einem Konzept des Unbewussten und der Psyche positioniert, wie es Carl Gustav Jung etwa hundert Jahre später konzipiert hat. Die Individuen, die als Gefangene einer rigiden Lebenseinstellung unbewusst (blind) wählen, sind nicht imstande wahre Entscheidungen zu treffen und für sie bleibt das Leben letzten Endes ein Rätsel.
