Papież Franciszek decyzją o zwołaniu dwóch ogólnoświatowych zgromadzeń biskupich w 2014 i 2015 r., jak i treścią wielu swych wystąpień i homilii, skoncentrował uwagę Kościoła na geniuszu rodziny, nie pomijając też trudności, na które jest dziś narażona. W adhortacji Amoris laetitia papież przypomniał, że „kiedy mężczyzna i kobieta zawierają sakrament małżeństwa, Bóg niejako »odzwierciedla się« w nich, nadaje im własne rysy i niezatarty charakter swojej miłości. Małżeństwo jest ikoną miłości Boga do nas”. Powiedział też, że „w rodzinie ludzkiej, zgromadzonej przez Chrystusa, przywrócony jest »obraz i podobieństwo« Najświętszej Trójcy”. Miłość małżeńska to najtrafniejsze odwzorowanie tego, co łączy Chrystusa z Kościołem. Kościół jest Jego Oblubienicą poślubioną na krzyżu. Wierność, wytrwałość i płodność – oto wiodące cechy miłości Jezusa względem nas. Dlatego życie małżeńskie musi być trwałe. Inaczej miłość nie może się rozwijać. Dziś małżonkowie i rodzice potrzebują szczególnej troski duszpasterskiej ze strony Kościoła. W trudnej sztuce przygotowania młodych osób do tego sakramentu papież Franciszek wskazuje na dwa fundamentalne czynniki: potrzebę głoszenia kerygmatu oraz proponowania narzeczonym inicjacji w sakrament.

By a decision to convene two worldwide episcopal assemblies in 2014 and 2015, as well as the content of many of his speeches and homilies, Pope Francis focused the Church’s attention on the genius of the family, not forgetting the difficulties to which it is exposed today. In the exhortation „Amoris laetitia” the Pope reminded that „when a man and a woman conclude the sacrament of marriage, God somehow »reflects« in them, gives them His own features and the indelible character of His love. Marriage is an icon of God’s love for us”. He also said that „in the human family gathered by Christ, the »image and likeness« of the Holy Trinity has been restored”. Marital love is the most accurate representation of what connects Christ with His Church. The Church is His bride married on the Cross. Faithfulness, perseverance and fertility – these are the leading features of Jesus’ love for us. Therefore, married life must be permanent. Otherwise love cannot grow. Today, spouses and parents need special pastoral care on the part of the Church. In the difficult art of preparing young people for this sacrament, Pope Francis points to two fundamental factors: the need to proclaim the kerygma and to propose to an engaged couple an initiation into the sacrament.
