This paper pictures the circumstances of Primate Glemp`s historic visit to Moscow in 1988 where he obtained the permit to erect a cross at the memorial dedicated to Polish officers killed in the Katyń Forest. Negotiating the permit was Glemp`s extraordinary achievement; the Primate made a special effort that the cross be erected in Katyń on September 1st 1988. These measures constitute the Cardinal`s historical policy: from the start of his primateship he prioritized the questions related to patriotism, national identity and commemorating historical events.
