The subject of the article is the issue of human/non-human death, animal mourning, mimetic desire and death drive in the novel by Paul Auster, Timbuktu. Particularly noteworthy is the relationship between Willy G. Christmas (a man) and Mr. Bones (a dog), presented in the context of Donna Haraway’s concept of companion species. The fate of Mr. Bones after Willy’s death reveals different kinds of interspecies relationships: from taking care of a stray dog to its adoption and changing it into an oedipal animal. The suicidal death of the main non-human character can be perceived as a desire to meet Willy again in the underworld (Timbuktu) an expression of longing for a lost friend, and the act of repetition of Willy’s (human) death, but also as a conscious choice of the dog.

Tematem artykułu jest problematyka ludzkiej/nie-ludzkiej śmierci, zwierzęcej żałoby, mimetycznego pragnienia oraz popędu śmierci w powieści Paula Austera, Timbuktu. Na szczególną uwagę zasługuje relacja między (człowiekiem) Willy’m G. Christmasem a Gnatem (psem), przedstawiona w kontekście koncepcji gatunków stowarzyszonych Donny Haraway. Losy Gnata po śmierci Willy’ego ukazują odmienne propozycje stosunków międzygatunkowych: od opieki nad psem bezpańskim po jego adopcję oraz wtłoczenie w schemat zwierzęcia edypalnego. Samobójcza śmierć głównego nie-ludzkiego bohatera może być odczytywana jako pragnienie ponownego spotkania z Willy’m w zaświatach (Timbuktu), wyraz tęsknoty za utraconym przyjacielem, akt-powtórzenie (ludzkiej) śmierci Willy’ego, ale też świadomy wybór psa.
