This article is an attempt to determine the nature of the Athenian garrisons that were situated in other member states of the Second Maritime League (fourth century BC). This issue is related to the broader problem regarding the nature of this alliance, often perceived by modern scholars through the prism of its predecessor (the fifth century Delian League), as an instrument of Athens’ imperial policy. In this case, having military posts in other member states, in addition to tasks related to the projection of power against external opponents, would also serve to guarantee the dominance of Athens over its allies. From a modern point of view, they could therefore have an occupational character, although the regulations governing the functioning of the symmachy contained guarantees to protect its members from such situations. The article focuses on material that regards the use of garrisons to interfere in the internal aff airs of allied poleis. The source material, however, contains a rather modest amount of similar information. Moreover, the analysis suggests that responsibility for cases of abuse tended to lie with specific Athenian commanders; however, it is difficult to talk about one „imperial” course in Athenian politics.

In diesem Artikel soll der Versuch unternommen werden, den Charakter der athenischen Garnisonen in den Mitgliedsstaaten des Zweiten Attischen Seebundes (4. Jahrhundert v. Chr.) zu bestimmen. Die Fragestellung hängt mit dem umfassenderen Problem des Charakters dieses Bündnisses zusammen, das von modernen Wissenschaft lern oft durch das Prisma seines Vorgängers (des Delischen Bundes des 5. Jahrhunderts) als Instrument der imperialen Politik Athens betrachtet wird. In diesem Fall würden militärische Vorposten in den Mitgliedsstaaten neben ihrer Aufgabe der Machtprojektion gegen äußere Gegner auch dazu dienen, die Dominanz des Hegemons der Union über seine Verbündeten zu gewährleisten. Aus heutiger Sicht könnten sie daher einen Besatzungscharakter haben, obwohl die Regeln der Symmachie Garantien enthielten, die ihre Mitglieder vor solchen Situationen schützen sollten. Der Schwerpunkt des Aufsatzes liegt auf der Sammlung von Hinweisen auf den Einsatz von Garnisonen zur Einmischung in die inneren Angelegenheiten verbündeter Poleis. Das Quellenmaterial enthält jedoch nur eine recht bescheidene Menge ähnlicher Informationen. Darüber hinaus legt die Analyse nahe, dass die Verantwortung für Kompetenzüberschreitungen eher bei bestimmten athenischen Befehlshabern lag. Es ist hingegen schwierig, von einem einzigen „imperial” Kurs in der athenischen Politik zu sprechen.

Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu próbę określenia charakteru ateńskich garnizonów w państwach członkowskich II Związku Morskiego (IV w. przed Chr.). Zagadnienie to wiąże się z szerszym problemem charakteru owego sojuszu, często postrzeganego przez współczesnych uczonych przez pryzmat swojego poprzednika (Związku Delijskiego z wieku V) jako instrument polityki imperialnej Aten. W takim wypadku placówki wojskowe w państwach członkowskich, oprócz zadań związanych z projekcją siły wobec przeciwników zewnętrznych, służyłyby również zagwarantowaniu dominacji hegemona związku nad sojusznikami. Ze współczesnego punktu widzenia mogłyby mieć zatem charakter okupacyjny, choć przepisy regulujące funkcjonowanie symmachii zawierały gwarancje mające uchronić jej członków przed takimi sytuacjami. W artykule nacisk został położony na zebranie wzmianek o wykorzystaniu garnizonów do ingerencji w sprawy wewnętrze sprzymierzonych poleis. Materiał źródłowy przynosi jednak dość skromną ilość podobnych informacji. Ponadto jego analiza sugeruje, że odpowiedzialność za przypadki nadużyć spoczywała raczej na konkretnych dowódcach ateńskich; trudno natomiast mówić o jednym „imperialnym” kursie w polityce ateńskiej.
