The goal of the paper is to review the semantic scope of the notion of governance in management sciences. This is why the analysis focuses on contextual application of the term in papers on management with the highest citation index published in the “Management” category in journals listed in the JCR. The analysis demonstrated that governance is often understood as corporate governance and defined as exercising supervision over decision makers in an organisation. However, this is not the only meaning. The term can also be understood as: ‘coordination of operations within an organisation', ‘resource allocation,' ‘decision making methodology in a project' or ‘engaging stakeholder groups in business processes'.

Celem artykułu jest weryfikacja zakresu pola znaczeniowego pojęcia governance w naukach o zarządzaniu. Dlatego zbadano kontekstowe użycie tego terminu w artykułach na temat zarządzania o największej liczbie cytowań dla kategorii zarządzanie w czasopismach z listy JCR. W wyniku analizy stwierdzono, że governance jest rozumiany często jako corporate goverance i definiowany jako nadzór nad decydentami w organizacji. Nie jest to jednak jedyne znaczenie. Zidentyfikowano także takie pojmowanie tego pojęcia, jak: „koordynacja działań w ramach organizacji”, „alokacja zasobów”, „metodyka podejmowania decyzji w projekcie” czy „włączanie poszczególnych grup interesariuszy w procesy biznesowe”.
