Przełom XX i XXI wieku ukazał nowe oblicze terroryzmu. Nuklearne ostrzeżenie czeczeńskich separatystów z 1995 roku, wykorzystanie bojowego środka trującego przez sektę Najwyższą Prawdę, czy wreszcie użycie przez terrorystów z Al-Kaidy rejsowych samolotów pasażerskich jako narzędzia terroru, wywołało przeświadczenie, iż terroryści w swych działaniach mogą posunąć się do coraz bardziej wyrafinowanych i śmiercionośnych metod ataku, których kulminacją mógłby stać się terrorystyczny zamach z wykorzystaniem broni nuklearnej. Artykuł prezentuje zagrożenie wynikające z próby pozyskania broni nuklearnej przez terrorystów, a także ukazuje międzynarodowe wysiłki na rzecz uniemożliwienia proliferacji broni jądrowej.

The turn of the 20th and 21st centuries showed a new face of terrorism. Nuclear warfare of the Chechen separatists in 1995, the use of chemical weapon by the sect of the Supreme Truth, and finally use by the Al-Qaeda terrorists of cruise passenger aircraft as a terror weapon, has resulted in the conviction that terrorists in their actions may move into increasingly sophisticated and deadly methods of attack, culminating in a terrorist attack using nuclear weapons. The article presents the threat posed by the attempted acquisition of nuclear weapons by terrorists and shows international efforts to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
