The gap that is gradually surfacing in young people’s representations and expectations of education and employment is increasingly clear as they experience highly tangled pathways and, consequently, deferred entry onto the job market, a conjuncture manifested in complex phenomena, such as the rise of the NEET group (people not in employment, education or training), compounded by an alarming disruption in various aspects of young people’s personal and work emancipation. Recognising the importance of locally specific approaches, this work presents two stages of a broader case study that aimed to understand and describe the NEET phenomenon in the municipality of Sintra (Portugal). This purpose was deemed best achievable by combining two data collection techniques: online questionnaire and autobiographical accounts, focused on the ways these young people managed the ‘holding pattern’ in which they found themselves in terms of how they used space/time, reasons why the continuation of their studies was not an option to be considered at that stage and what they thought of the current moment of their lives.

Zwiększająca się luka, obecna w reprezentacjach młodych ludzi i ich oczekiwaniach dotyczących edukacji i zatrudnienia, jest coraz wyraźniejsza, ponieważ ich ścieżki życia często są bardzo splątane, przez co w konsekwencji doświadczają opóźnień w dostępie do rynku pracy, przejawiających się w złożonych sytuacjach, takich jak zjawisko NEET (not in employment, education or training/niekształcący się, niepracujący, nieszkolący się), spotęgowane przez alarmujące rozłożenie w czasie różnych aspektów zawodowej i osobistej emancypacji młodych ludzi. Uznając znaczenie podejścia opartego na badaniu lokalnej rzeczywistości, praca ta odzwierciedla dwa etapy szerszego studium przypadku, mającego na celu scharakteryzowanie i zrozumienie zjawiska NEET w gminie Sintra (Portugalia). Materiał pozwalający na odpowiedź na nurtujące nas pytania uzyskaliśmy przez połączenie dwóch technik gromadzenia danych – kwestionariusza online i narracji autobiograficznych – dotyczących sposobu, w jaki młodzi ludzie zarządzają „stanem zawieszenia”, w którym się znajdują, w odniesieniu do wykorzystania czasu i przestrzeni oraz poznania powodów, dla których kontynuowanie nauki nie jest możliwe na tym etapie, a także ich przemyśleń na temat obecnego momentu ich życia.
